Chapter 30 â Oops
â Amberlyn
That boy was going to drive me insane! I practically threw my backpack onto the chair beside me, ripped open the zipper, and hauled out my notebook and pen.
Aiden sauntered into the game room and sat casually across from me, yawning as he set down his backpack and pulled out a slip of paper.
âWhatâs that?â I lifted my chin in the direction of his paper.
âThe coaches of the guysâ teams gave us the instructions since you girls got to draw our names.â
âWhat are the instructions?â I asked, curious in spite of my determination to stay angry.
âTheyâve divided up the whole Lakeshore region. Each couple will be paired up with another couple so we can reach all the different schools.â
âWe are not a couple.â I crossed my arms. He barely paused, and I swear he was holding back laughter.
âYou and I will be paired up with Connor and Addie from the volleyball team, and weâll be in charge of reaching out to the Rockford School District.â
âOh, I bet Bella is furious that Connor will be hanging out with Addie.â
Aiden stopped and looked up at me, with his jaw dropped.
âWhat? Bella and Connor are talking.â
âWeâre not couples, remember?â Aiden smirked.
âWhatever.â I picked at my fingernails, pretending to be bored.
âI was thinking we could start by going to their schoolâs website and seeing if we could find out the names of the coaches.â
âI think we should start by calling the administration office,â I interrupted.
âWhat?â
âYou know, where the superintendent works. We can tell them about the project and see if they can get all the coaches phone numbers for us.â I stopped to wait for his reaction.
âThatâs brilliant,â Aiden said.
âThank you.â I genuinely smiled for the first time that day.
âYou are so beautiful.â
My smile fell, and I panicked. âYou canât say stuff like that to me.â
âWhy?â He lifted his eyebrows.
âBecause youâre not my boyfriend anyâI mean, you never were my boyfriend.â
âI guess we remember things differently,â he said.
âWhat do you mean by that?â I felt my lip quiver.
His voice dropped to a near whisper. âYou may not remember having me for a boyfriend, but I will never forget the way it felt to have you for my girlfriend.â
âI was neverââ
âAmberlyn, stop.â
âStop what?â My voice was almost a squeak. He came around the table, knelt beside me, and placed his hands on my hips. He was so tall that even kneeling he was nearly at eye level.
âStop fighting this,â he whispered. âStop fighting me.â
I twisted a tiny curl of his hair around my finger. I swear the sound that came from somewhere deep inside him was practically a purr, and he leaned into my hand.
He turned his face and grazed his nose along the inside of my wrist. I melted right into his arms, and before I knew what was happening, we were kissing, I mean, really, really kissing. I could almost hear the eighties make-out playlist dancing through the back of my mind.
âGross,â my little sister Janie said from behind Aiden.
